Update: Governor Newsom vetoed AB 1835 on Sept. 30. The Governor said he “deeply supports the underlying goal of this bill” and promised to provide a solution. Children Now will continue to push the Governor to make closing the loophole in LCFF that undermines education equity an urgent priority.

With COVID-19-related learning loss and the struggles of distance learning, the pandemic is exacerbating pre-existing inequities in our education system.
Under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), students in low-income communities, students who are English Learners, and students in foster care should receive targeted funding for supports that meet their unique needs. However, in many cases, these funds are not reaching the students for whom they are intended. AB 1835 will ensure that the funding provided under the LCFF for students most in need is actually directed to support them.
