Children Now’s Statement on Governor Newsom’s 2024-25 State Budget May Revision
OAKLAND, CA – Children Now President Ted Lempert issued the following statement today in response to Governor Newsom’s 2024-25 California state budget May Revision:
“After already threatening the safety of California’s foster youth by proposing the elimination of FURS (the 24/7, in-person helpline), the Administration doubled down in today’s May Revise by proposing even more cuts to child welfare, as well as untenable cuts to child care, home visiting, TK-12 education, mental health and access to health services. The very last place to look for cuts is our kids. California ranks 35th in child well-being, and while our spending on other government programs ranks among the top nationally, our spending on kids ranks nowhere near that. We urge the Governor and Legislature to reverse these draconian proposed cuts.”
